Fashion Flashes for Nineteen Sixty
Striking Garments for Casual and Formal Wear
FUNDS FOR REFUGEE PROJECTS
Fashion flashes for 1960 were featured in “April Affair” sponsored by the Hongkong Junior Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Paquerette Ltd for Jaycee World Refugee Year projects, and held in the Miramar Hotel last evening.
Ten lovely models, varied in style, appearance and age groups, modelled striking garments for casual, informal and formal occasions before a fashionable audience headed by Lady Bastyan [wife of Sir Edric Montague Bastyan, KBE, Commander British Forces], who was guest of honour.
Mr Alex S C Wu, Jaycee President, read a personal message from Lady Black.
One of the most outstanding creations was the “Shangri-la” from Paquerette’s Oriental Boutique, worn with dramatic poise by Kiki Norman. The emerald green French brocade cut-away hostess coat, worn over slinky black leotards symbolised the sublety of Eastern splendour and leisured ease.
In complete contrast but still Oriental was the white two piece cheongsam “China Rose” prettily modelled by Pauline Tsang. The separates with Mandarin collar, hand-embroidered red rose on the bodice, and skirt with rounded slits, were a cool, sleeveless ensemble of Swiss-ribbed cotton.
Joyous Youth
Angela Fung was a picture of joyous youth in her red linen “Matelot” sheath with white-edged sailor collar. In step with the Miramar orchestral music she modelled the gay spring dress with a jaunty, nautical air, gaining spontaneous applause.
A gorgeous gown of scarlet and gold leaf brocade was worn with flowing grace by Phoebe Malcolm, who later appeared in “Carefree”, an Adriatic blue silk shirtwaister with delightful green picture hat in bold colour contrast.
Carolyn Ames was attractive in a softly-pleated shark-skin sun-dress, topped by a Mediterranean blue blazer with white braiding. She was followed by Farida Ramjahn, demure in an immaculate wide-skirted sun-dress embroidered with a spray of golden poppies and worn with a yellow cartwheel hat.
A most becoming shade of aquamarine in a silk shantung two-piece was modelled by May Alveres. Later she wore a beautifully-fitted cocktail gown with transparent jacket entitled “Silhouette”.
Thai Ensemble
Lindy Parks was charming in a Thai silk ensemble aptly named “Globe-trotter” and ideal for the travelling woman. Of natural silk the straight coat had siide slits and was lined with royal blue silk. The skirt to match the coat was worn with a contrasting green blouse, equally effective when the coat was reversed.
“Tempo”, worn by Mary Chan was another Thai silk model of casual sophistication, with blouse and skirt in light and deep tones of crushed strawberries.
Blends of different national dress comprising Hawaiian, Chinese and Japanese features resulted in “Pakemuu”, elegantly shown by Flora Henningsen. The lacquer red brocade had unusual flowing peaked sleeves lined with contrasting silk.
